Last year’s Horse Lake Ice Fishing Derby was such a success that organizer, Mark Roseboom from Lone Butte Sporting Goods has decided to do it again.

His store is the main sponsor of the Jan. 30 derby, but BC Magazine has also offered its support and will be on site all day, seeing what it’s all about, says Roseboom.

“They will be photographing and may use the pictures, and there will be a write-up about the derby of some sort.”

Big fish will net big payoffs to some lucky anglers, as there will be three cash prizes of $300 each awarded for the heaviest kokanee, rainbow trout and lake trout weighed in that day. Several door prizes will also be handed out.

Fishing starts before sunrise and ends at 3 p.m.

Complimentary chili, soup, hot chocolate and coffee will be available at the weigh-in site and food deliveries to the ice will gladly be made for a cash donation, Roseboom adds.

Derby entry fee is $10 and people can enter in advance at Lone Butte Sporting Goods, as well as on the day of the derby at the weigh-in station.

Any profits will be donated to the Lone Butte Volunteer Fire Department of which he is a member.

According to Roseboom, there have been rainbow trout of up to two pounds taken out of Horse Lake within the last month, as well as a 16 lb. and another 18 lb. lake trout.

“The derby should be good if it’s anything like last year. We had 150 people on the ice.”

Bonanza Resort and the weigh-in station are located on South Horse Lake, 16 kilometres from 100 Mile House.
