Hoop Sheep find the basket at last

The Black Sheep are finally on the scoreboard.

The Black Sheep are finally on the scoreboard, while Co-op continues its domination atop the standings as the Port Alberni Men’s Spring Basketball League reached the midway point of its eight-week season last Wednesday.

Co-op improved its record to 4–0 with an 85–60 win over Ladybird Engraving in the first of three games last week.

Team Ralla beat Tseshaht Market 90–75, and the Black Sheep squeaked by the Donut Shop 56–52 in the final game of the night.

Co-op 85 – Ladybird Engraving 60

This match featured two strong teams jockeying for top seeding.  Co-op opened with a strong 9-2 run within the first few minutes.  Ladybird would peck away to eventually take a 44-39 lead by halftime.

Co-op opened the second half strong, going on a 14-point run to take a 53-44 advantage. Ladybird slowly chipped away at this lead until Co-op stepped on the gas with an 11-point run to take command of the game and cruise to an 85-60 victory.

Leading Co-op scorers were Josh Kurucz 36 points, Jon Joe 16 pts and Marcus Lobb 13 pts. Ladybird Engraving leaders were Eddie Fred 13 pts and Anthony McIntosh 11pts.

Team Ralla 90 – Tseshaht Market 75

After a close battle with multiple lead changes, Tseshaht Market held a slight 18-15 advantage midway through the first half.

Team Ralla then went on an unheard of 20-point run to take 35-18 lead. Tseshaht Market attempted to claw back through the remainder of the game but would get no closer than 11 pts.

Team Ralla cruised to a 90-75 win.  Tseshaht Market leaders were Bobby Rupert 35 pts, Niko Kaminski 14 pts, Ricky Masso 12 pts. Team Ralla top scorers were Brendan Lundy Sam 20 pts, Adam Yaredic 19 pts, Terrance Watts 17 pts.

Black Sheep 56 – Donut Shop 52

The Black Sheep  won their first game of the season taking out the undefeated Donut Shop.

The Donut Shop were without some of their players but found some reinforcements from other teams to help take an early 10-4 advantage.

The Black Sheep slowly grappled back, scoring the final six points of the half to take a 28-26 halftime advantage.

The Black Sheep defensively packed the paint and forced the Donut Shop to take long range jumpers, which were not falling.  Meanwhile the Sheep offensively crashed the boards to get multiple second chance opportunities to score and they did.

When the dust settled the Black Sheep had earned a 56-52 victory.

Donut Shop scoring leaders were Sam Moncur 18 pts, Richard Mills 16 pts and Remy Contant 11 pts. Black Sheep leaders were Dave Johnson, Davis Smith, and Joe Kalugin 12 pts.

FAST BREAKS… Men’s Spring Basketball League teams play three games each Wednesday night at ADSS. The first five weeks are league play followed by three weeks of playoff action.
