The Bulkley Valley Ladies Fastball League will be wrapping up their season next weekend with their annual year-end tournament, to be held in Telkwa on Saturday and Sunday. League president Judy Vandermeulen said the season has been fairly successful, with five teams taking part in twice-weekly games throughout May and June.
At the end of the season, the Houston Valleycats were at the top of the rankings, with 10 wins and one loss. In second place was the Telkwa Pub team, with eight wins and three losses, followed by the Houston Spanx with seven wins and five losses. The Smithers Valley Vipers finished in fourth place, and the Moricetown Kyahwild team came in fifth.
Vandermeulen said although the number of women playing has decreased over the years, there’s still a strong future for women’s fastball in the Bulkley Valley.
“Houston never had a team before, and now they have two,” she said.
She mentioned strong camaraderie between the players as one of the reasons many players keep coming back to play every year.
“There’s always good competition. They’ve been playing each other for years,” Vandermeulen said. “It’s always a lot of fun.”
She also said the league wanted to officially thank the umpires “for putting up with us.”
