Fishing is hitting prime time in both Sooke and Port Renfrew. Now, with decent weather happening, anglers are getting out on the water for some good chinook aand halibut action.
In Sooke, Otter Point seems to be where the best action is. Fishing either on the Gordon’s Beach side or the trailer park side has been good. Good depths of 40 to 120 feet on the downrigger works best. Bloody Nose teaser head with anchovy trolled behind a purple onion hot spot is a good setup. I find my best results are close to the bottom. There’s lots of coho around with many of them being hatchery.
In Port Renfrew fishing is also getting good. Fishing the beach — the best action is Logan to the Wallbran although Owen Point to the rock pile has been good as well.
Early this week No Bananas Charters hooked nice Tyees off Logan to make for happy clients on board. The Swiftsure Bank has been very productive as well. With more than a week of good weather, flat water and no swell, fishing for chinooks and halibut has been good. The hot spot being the south-west corner of the bank at the chicken ranch. Josh Walker of Trailhead Resort caught a nice chinook on the banks, a 31-pounder. I’m sure that’s just the start of bigger ones to come.
This coming weekend in Renny is the 12th annual Davey Derby which is being held at the Port Renfrew Marina. Tickets can be purchased at Island Outfitters or the Marina.
Until next time.
