Attention all anglers this weekend it’s the first annual Sooke Coho Derby being held this Saturday off Sooke. This is a one-day winner take 2/3 of the pot with the remainder of the cash going to the Charters River Salmon Habitat Interpretive Centre on Sooke River Road. Also the derby will be taking donations of non-perishable items for the food bank. There will be a draw for a rod and reel for anglers who donate a fish to the food bank. Fishing starts at daybreak on Saturday. The weigh-in will start at 10 a.m. and continue till 2 p.m. at which time the winner will be announced. There will be other prizes as well. Tickets are $30 a rod available at Crab Shack, Eagle-Eye Outfitters, West Shore Fishing Centre in Langford, Island Outfitters and Trotac Marine in Victoria. This should be a good time and with coho fishing heating up off Sooke fishing will be good. Now that anglers can take a wild coho as of Oct. 1 — it’s all good.
The Port Renfrew Marina Coho Derby was held last weekend and the winner was Renny local John Wells of Hindsight Charters fishing with his buddy Grant taking home more than $8,500 with a 18.12-lb. coho caught in the bay close to the river mouth. They also caught the second place fish and were greeted with a warm reception at the dock.
