HSS junior girls crowned zone champs

The Houston Secondary School Junior Girls Basketball Team won the Northwest Zone Junior B Championships on Saturday in Terrace.

The Houston Secondary School Junior Girls Basketball Team won the Northwest Zone Junior B Championships on Saturday at Thornhill Junior Secondary School in Terrace.

Led by Tournament MVP Jamie Beck, and Tournament All-Stars Chaelle Margerm and Delainey Larocque, the Wolverines downed Queen Charlotte Secondary School by a score of 34 – 22. The girls played tenacious defence, leading 17 – 0 at halftime.

The island team made a game of it, outscoring the Wolverines 19 – 6 in the third quarter. Applying their full-court press, though, and in the fourth quarter Houston ran away with the win.

Margerm led all scorers in the final with 16 points. Earlier in the day, Houston beat Thornhill Junior Secondary by a score of 35 – 19 to advance to the final.

The girls’ strong play, combining solid defence, strong rebounding, and timely scoring is attributed to the guidance of coach Robbyn Flett. The win capped a fun season for the Houston Wolverines, Northwest Zone Junior B Champions.
