Nelson’s Ian Walgren raced to a gold, silver and two bronze medals in speedskating at the Special Olympic Canada Winter Games last month.
Walgren, a member of the West Kootenay Speed Skating Club representing Team B.C. at the event in Thunder Bay, won gold in the 333-metre race, silver in the 222, and bronze medals in the 500 and 777 events.
In his best race, Walgren set a personal best of 28.47 seconds to take the gold.
Walgren’s medals were part of 41 overall won by B.C. speedskaters from Feb. 25 to 29. His father Bruce, who also coaches the West Kootenay Speed Skating Club, served as an assistant coach for Team B.C.
The eight sports at the Games also included five-pin bowling, alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, curling, figure skating, floor hockey and snowshoeing.
