The Kootenay Ice have acquired defenceman Lenny Hackman (1995) from the Lethbridge Hurricanes in exchange for a 12th-round pick in the 2015 WHL Bantam Draft.

“Our goal heading into the WHL Trade Deadline was to add depth to our defence corps and we are happy to add a player with Lenny Hackman’s experience and work ethic to our lineup,” said Kootenay Ice general manager Jeff Chynoweth in a team press release. “He is an excellent skater who we are anticipating will play some key minutes on our blue line.”

A native of Airdrie, Alta., Hackman has registered 21 points in 175 career WHL games, all with the Hurricanes.

“We can’t thank Lenny enough for the outstanding contributions he has made to our hockey club on the ice and in the community for the past three seasons” said Peter Anholt, Lethbridge Hurricanes head coach and general manager, in a team press release. “I’m glad we were able to make a trade where he’s able to continue his hockey career.”

The 5-foot-9, 185-pound defenceman was a ninth-round selection (179th overall) of the Hurricanes at the 2010 WHL Bantam Draft.

Hackman will turn 20 years old Jan. 30, making him the second-oldest defenceman on the Ice behind recent addition Tanner Lishchynsky, who turned 20 on Jan. 5.

The Ice are now carrying nine defencemen on the active roster, though Tanner Faith will undergo season-ending shoulder surgery.

Hackman is expected to join the team for practice at Western Financial Place later today.
