Invitation to Sooke Runners

The EMCS Sr. boys Wolverines basketball team finished its season in the South Island playoffs this past week. Their first opponent was number 1 St. Mike’s in the first round.

The previous league play saw EMCS on the short end of a 111-23 score. A much improved Sooke defence altered the score from their earlier match but the results stayed the same – SMUS 70 – EMCS 19.

The second game of the double knockout format played at the home of the Lions of Lambrick Park saw Sooke face Esquimalt – a team EMCS lost to by 29 in the regular  season. Leading most of the game, the Wolverines used a full court press to cause numerous turnovers on the Esquimalt guards.

Lack of numbers left EMCS short staffed.

Even after bringing up grade 10 point guard Chris Shankar and grader 9 post Quinn Yates there were only seven guys, that’s two spares. With 2:49 left to play in the fourth quarter and EMCS down by four, the third player fouled out leaving only four players left to play vs Esquimalt’s five.

Then came something I will never forget as long as I coach. The four Sooke boys held the dockers to five points in the final three minutes while playing 4-on-5.

EMCS played with a lot of heart and hustle but fell short of the victory.

The sr. boys program bids farewell to seniors Brady White, Tyler Migneault and Art Smith as well as two-year player and team mvp Kody Mcguiness. Kody was selected by coaches in the league to play in the south vs north seniors’ allstar game in April. Kody joins past EMCS players Jordan Cooper, Cody Yates, Dustin Rebagliatti, and last year’s Kyle Percival as Sooke players voted into the honoured year-end game.
