The Isfeld Ice senior boys basketball team lost by two points to Carihi in the final of the annual Totem Classic last weekend in Port Alberni.
Ice co-captain Temwa Mtawali paced his side with 40 points and Zachary Taylor scored 14 in the 79-77 loss. Both made the tournament all-star team.
“The boys played great and I felt really bad for them losing with .6 seconds left, but we had a chance to tie it and missed a tip in,” coach Dikran Zabunyan said. “We are becoming a very hard-working team.”
Mtawali also scored 48 points in an 85-66 semi-final win over Reynolds of Victoria. Quinn Roberts and Mike Aguilar each finished the game with 14 points.
The Ice defeated Stelly’s Secondary of Saanich 81-36 in the quarter-final. Mtawali scored 35 points, and Roberts and Aguilar each scored 14 points.
Isfeld’s record now stands at 12 wins and five losses on the season.
Their next league game is Tuesday in Ladysmith. This weekend is the Firefighter Tournament in Esquimalt.
