Island Spirit Sports All Star Cheerleading is launching into its sixth season of competitive All Star Cheerleading in the Comox Valley.
With a new training facility and tumbling program in place, director Mia Heitland is looking forward to an exciting season.
“We have moved our practices into the amazing gymnastics facility at the Comox Community Centre, and the Chimo gymnastics club is now running tumbling programs for our athletes.” Heitland said. “Better facilities, convenient location, and high quality training mean our athletes and teams will benefit this season.”
The All Star Cheerleading club, one of about 15 such programs in B.C., is now in its sixth season of coaching athletes from ages 6-18 to jump, stunt, tumble and dance. This year, three or four teams competitive teams will represent Island Spirit at provincial, national and international competitions.
“We will run a youth, junior and senior team this season,” Heitland explained, “and are taking a list for our mini team of 6-8-year-olds.
“This season, our junior team will travel to Edmonton and our Senior team will again travel to Washington State, and will finish the season at the Aloha International Cheerleading Championships in Honolulu in April.”
Registration for the 2011-12 season has now begun, and details and registration forms are available on the Island Spirit website at www.IslandSpiritSports.com.
“Space is limited on our competitive teams,” Heitland said, “and as we are once again bringing in American coaches and choreographers over the Thanksgiving weekend, registration will close early this season, in order to ensure that teams are ready for their training weekend.”
Practices start the week of Sept. 12.
In-person registration will be held Aug. 16 and 18 from 5-7 p.m. in Comox Community Centre gym lobby. For more information call 250-703-1194 or e-mail IslandSpiritSports@shaw.ca.
