A Nanaimo-based rep girls’ soccer team took provincials by Storm. The Upper Island Storm U18 girls’ side won the B.C. Soccer A Cup championship earlier this month in Burnaby.
The gold-medal match was worthy of a provincial final, as it came down to penalty kicks before the Island girls edged the Delta Coastal Selects. The match was 0-0 after full time. Emily Shires scored for the Storm in extra time, but Delta equalized just in time to force a shootout.
Shires, Aiyanna Grubac, Megan Dial, Sydney Goodwin and then Rachael Baird, with the winner, scored for the Storm and Bronwyn Kirk, a defender filling in as keeper, earned the win including a crucial save in the shootout.
