Island volleyball championships see all-Belmont final

Local girls win fifth consecutive title

Belmont represented well at the Island Championship volleyball beach doubles.

The Grade 11 and 12 girls final was an all-Belmont final. Savannah Purdy and Olivia Godek took on Hannah and Gracie May, and Purdy and Godek won for their fifth straight title. The May sisters forced the game into a tie-breaker set.

Taylee Pomponio and Aspen Nemeth placed seventh in the Grade 11 and 12 girls division.

Layla Martinez and Jordyn Waller, and Jasmyn Loo and Abbey Nault participated in the Grade 10 division.

Nolan Zaragoza and Tyler Hardy competed in the Grade 11 and 12 boys division.

The teams were split into pools and competed pool play before moving on to medalling rounds.

Head coach Mike Toakley said competition in beach volleyball is more difficult now than ever. There is a Nanaimo beach volleyball academy and more money is being spent on facilities so players can practice on sand five days per week.
