The Vernon Jays doubled the Green Machines 8-4 to kick off the 2017 Vernon Baseball Mosquito Division season at Lakeview Park.
Grady Barg pitched two solid innings for the Jays, striking out four batters, allowing two runs and drove in a pair on offence. Jordie Brown struck out six and allowed no runs in his two innings of work while (Big) Ben Bradford closed out the game, striking out three of the four batters he faced.
Sawyer Lehr helped the winners out with good defence at third base, and went 3-for-four at the plate with an RBI.
For the Green Machines, catcher Evan Kashuba went 1-for-1 with a walk and two RBIs, and had a solid game behind the plate. Nolan Wilson went 2-for-2 with two runs and 2 ribbies. Caleb Buffie pitched one scoreless inning, striking out three.
Koen Holmes allowed one run and struck out three in his outing,while Drayden Routley struck out three in pitching a scoreless inning. Chase Brumpton allowed one run and struck out three to close out the game.
The Hytec Red Sox edged the Wayside Mavericks 13-9, thanks to stellar pitching from Marty Pare and Vincent Sanfilippo.
Kaleb Murray led the Mavs with two hits and threw a dominant shutout in the sixth inning.
League play runs Monday to Friday at Lakeview Park, games starting at 6 p.m.
