Jim Cotter stays undefeated to secure playoff spot at provincial championship

The defending champion held off Michael Johnson 5-4 in the late draw at the Nelson Curling Club.

Jim Cotter is sweeping away the competition at theĀ 2016 Canadian Direct Insurance BC Men’s Championship.

The defending provincial champion survived a late comeback by Michael Johnson in the late draw Thursday to win 5-4.

The victory qualified Cotter for the Page Playoff and gave his Vernon-Kelowna rink the only 4-0 record at the 16-rink tournament.

Meanwhile, Johnson’s loss meant he’s in a four-way tie for second place with a 3-1 record.

In other Draw 6 play, Glen Jackson improved to 3-1 with a 6-4 win over Daniel Wenzek. Jeff Richard also moved into second place following a 6-3 win against Wes Craig, and Sean Geall took his rink to 3-1 following a 10-3 blowout victory against Tom Buchy.

The tournament runs until Sunday. The winner represents BC at the Brier, March 5 to 13 in Ottawa.
