Jock Talk: Senior girls’ soccer quarter-finals start Tuesday

Cricket returns to Windsor in full force Friday and Saturday

Windsor Park is packed with sports action this weekend.

After last week’s start to the season, Oak Bay cricketers open the weekend action Saturday, April 29 when the Incogs welcome Metchosin for a noon start at Windsor Park. On Sunday, April 30, Oak Bay plays the Islanders at noon, also at Windsor Park.

In Premier Men’s Rugby playoffs, the Castaway Wanderers welcome the University of British Columbia for a 2:45 p.m. kick-off Saturday.

In Premier Reserve play Saturday, the University of Victoria Norsemen host UBC 2 at UVic, with kick-off at 1 p.m.

In high school rugby, senior girls play has Oak Bay hosting Mt. Doug, Glenlyon Norfolk School, Claremont and Reynolds this Friday, April 28, with the Oak Bay girls playing games against Mt. Doug and Reynolds. St. Michaels University School A and B are at Belmont Friday, April 28. Come Friday, May 5 Oak Bay takes on Stelly’s and host Esquimalt.

On the boys’ side, the Oak Bay Tier 1 team visits SMUS on Saturday, April 29 at 3:45 p.m. while Oak Bay Tier 2 visits GNS on Tuesday, May 2 at 3:45 p.m.

The high school tennis season has Oak Bay and Reynolds squaring off Wednesday, May 3 at the Henderson courts while GNS and Lambrick are at Carnarvon. Play begins at 4 p.m.

High school senior girls’ soccer quarter-finals hit the turf Tuesday, May 2 but at the time of writing, the standings are still being determined.

• Game 1: fourth A/AA is at first AAA

• Game 2: fourth AAA is at first A/AA

• Game 3: third A/AA is at second AAA

• Game 4: third AAA is at second A/AA

Semi-finals follow on Thursday, May 4 with the winners of Game 1 and Game 4 and the winners of Game 2 and Game 3 facing off. The finals take place Tuesday, May 9. Keep up-to-date with the standings and schedule at lowerislandschoolsports.ca.

Turning to high-performance regional baseball, the Victoria Premier Eagles are on the road all week but the Oak Bay-based Victoria Mariners bring Premier Baseball League play to the region. Saturday, May 6 has the North Shore Twins visiting the Ms for a doubleheader at Layritz Field at 1 and 3:30 p.m. On Sunday the Mariners welcome the Coquitlam Reds for 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. games, also at Layritz.

For Oak Bay ball hockey players, the Greater Victoria Minor Ball Hockey Association plans to send four or five teams to the Western Challenge Cup in Edmonton July 13 to 16. Player evaluations are set for:

• U11 – Wednesday, May 3 at 6 p.m. and Friday, May 5 at 6:15 p.m., both at Eagle Ridge arena.

• U13 – Tuesday, May 2 at 7:15 p.m. at Eagle Ridge and Friday, May 5 at at 5:45 p.m. at Pearkes arena.

• U15 – Wednesday, May 3 at 7:15 p.m. at Eagle Ridge and Friday, May 5 at 7 p.m. at Pearkes arena.

• U17 – Tuesday, May 2 at 8:30 p.m. and Friday, May 5 at 7:30 p.m., both at Eagle Ridge.

• U19 – Thursday, May 4 at 6:15 p.m. at Eagle Ridge and Monday, May 8 at 7:15 p.m. at Pearkes Green Rink.

The tryout fee is $20 for two sessions.

The Intermediate A and Junior A Shamrocks teams host their home openers Saturday, April 29 when the Intermediate squad hosts the New Westminster Salmon Bellies at 1:30 p.m. and the Junior ‘Rocks host the Port Coquitlam Saints at 5 p.m. Both tilts are at the Q Centre.
