JOCK TALK: Victoria Shamrocks trio in action this week

Lacrosse fans have plenty of reason to be excited, Colin Gall writes

West Shore lacrosse fans are in for a big week starting Saturday (May 13) at The Q Centre.

The Victoria intermediate A Shamrocks kick things off hosting Maple Ridge at 1:30 p.m., followed by the junior Shamrocks hosting the Langley Thunder at 5 p.m. Following road trips to New Westminster and Langley, the junior ‘Rocks return home to host the Coquitlam Adanacs at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 21 at The Q Centre.

Meanwhile, the senior Victoria Shamrocks promise to thrill fans with their long-awaited Western Lacrosse Association season opener next Friday (May 19) at The Q, when they host the Langley Thunder with a 7:30 p.m. face-off.

The WLA Shamrocks and Victoria HarbourCats baseball club are celebrating each other this summer. On Sunday, June 25, the HarbourCats mark Shamrocks Day at Royal Athletic Park, when ‘Rocks fans with a lacrosse ticket receive a premium seat for $10. On Friday, July 14, the Shamrocks host HarbourCats Night during their Salute to Local Heroes at The Q Centre. Fans who show a HarbourCats ticket will receive a general admission bowl ticket for $10 to see the Shamrocks play Coquitlam. For more details, visit victoriashamrocks.com or harbourcats.com.

High school cycling returns this week with the year’s first BMX event, May 17. Students should show up at the Juan de Fuca Rec Centre BMX track by 3 p.m., with racing beginning at 4:30.

Senior girls’ high school rugby continues this week as regular season play draws to a close. The Belmont girls will take on Mt. Doug and host Stelly’s on Friday (May 12) before heading to Edward Milne to face the host team and Glenlyon Norfolk School next Monday.

In Victoria and District Cricket action, Metchosin takes on Albion this Saturday at noon at the Metchosin pitch.

Auto racing fans head to Western Speedway this Saturday for Demolition Night, featuring the demo series, bombers, claimers and drifters. Grandstands open at 4:30 p.m. with qualifying at 5:30. Fan Fest gets underway at 6 p.m., time permitting, with racing at 6:30. Rounding the corner next weekend is West Shore Night at the Races Saturday, May 20, featuring sprint cars, stock cars, mini stocks and the Old Timers Racing Association.

Enjoy a ballpark hot dog and catch the next generation of ball players at the inaugural Triangle Baseball May Long Weekend Invitational Tournament. Games start for 6 p.m. Friday, May 19 at the Juan de Fuca fields and continue through the weekend.

Turning to the region’s B.C. Premier Baseball League action, the Victoria Mariners host a double-header this Sunday, May 14, taking on the Parksville Royals at 1 and 3:30 p.m. at Layritz Park. The Victoria Eagles have the weekend off.
