Vernon’s Austin Jones scored UBC Okanagan Heat’s only goal in a three-game pre-season soccer excursion to Washington state.
The Heat lost 2-1 to the University of Puget Sound Loggers in Tacoma to kick off the three-games-in-four-days trip.
A goal just 42 seconds into the match by the hosts was answered when Jones, a fifth-year forward, was taken down in the box on a great through ball. Jones promptly converted the penalty kick to make the score 1-1.
The Loggers notched their second goal off a throw-in to close out the first half.
UBCO moved on to Parkland, Wash. and a date with the Pacific Lutheran Lutes, who scored a 1-0 decision.
The only goal of the game came in the 64th minute.
UBCO missed a penalty kick in the first half.
The tour closed against a tough NCAA Division II school in the Saint Martin Saints, in Lacey, Wash., and the Heat came away with a 0-0 draw, with Jones unlucky to score his second goal of the trip.
The Saints keeper made a brilliant save in the last minute off Jones to deny UBCO the win. Coldstream’s Enzo Paal is a second-year midfielder-forward with the Heat, who begin their regular Canada West season Sept. 6 in Prince George.
