Journey Middle School’s girls’ volleyball team is having a very good season.
The Grade 6 and 7 team, made up of 11- to 13-year-old athletes, continued its winning streak on Tuesday when it defeated Royal Oak Middle School in straight sets (25-14 and 25-15). The team then went on to defeat Pacific Christian School, again in straight sets (25-18 and 25-17).
It was Journey’s only home games of the season and added to a perfect season 8-0.
“It’s the first time in more than 10 years that we’ve entered a team in the competitive division,” Zac Vine, Journey’s athletic director, said prior to the home games.
“When we last entered this division we got beaten very badly and since that time we’ve played only in the recreational division.”
Vine credits the dedication of the girls on the team and the hard work and skill of the team’s coach, Dale Riddell, for the team’s success.
“When we had the snowstorm in January, the girls were upset that they missed a practice and the next day they were all here, making sure that they got back into the gym to make up for lost time,” Vine said.
The team is on track to go into the playoffs at the beginning of March against teams in Sooke, Victoria and Saanich school districts. From there, the top four teams compete for the title of Lower Island champion.
“I think this team represents a chance for Journey Middle School to put a banner up on the wall,” Vine said.
“These same girls can play together next year, and if they do as well, have a real shot at the provincial championship.”
