Jr. Shamrocks fight for spots
Junior lacrosse season is underway as the Victoria Shamrocks lost, 12-10, to the Langley Thunder at Juan de Fuca arena on Sunday.
Both teams fielded plenty of newbies.
Langley took a 9-4 lead after two periods. The Shamrocks scored the final three goals of the game but it was too late.
Up-and-coming star Jesse King led the Shamrocks with four goals and added two assists while Brody Eastwood had two goals and three assists. Also scoring for Victoria were Devon Casey, Tom Arsenault, Jamie Sorenson and Josh Fagan. Next up for the Jr. Shamrocks is an exhibition game at 5 p.m., Saturday, April 23 at Bear Mountain Arena versus the Nanaimo Timbermen.
Duch back with Shamrocks
The Victoria Shamrocks are bringing back their leading scorer, Rhys Duch, and their captain, Nick Inch, for the 2011 Western Lacrosse Association season.
The Shamrocks have also signed sniper Corey Small, who is currently leading the Edmonton Rush of the National Lacrosse League in scoring with 52 points in 14 games. Last year, the 24-year-old was 10th in scoring in Ontario’s Major Series, leading the Kitchener Waterloo Kodiaks with 59 points in 15 games.
Small is the second young addition to the Shamrocks 2011 squad along with transition man Andrew Suitor of the NLL’s Minnesota Swarm.
Duch will play for Team Canada at the 2011 World Indoor Lacrosse Championship in Prague and won’t be available to the Shamrocks until June.
The Shamrocks open the season at home to the Langley Thunder on May 20.
