Junior bantam Giants stumble in provincial title game

The Victoria Renegades downed the Chilliwack Giants 24-20 at Langley's McLeod Athletic Park.

Chilliwack’s junior bantam Giants came up four points short of a championship, falling 24-20 to the Victoria Renegades in last Sunday’s provincial final.

The teams squared off at McLeod Athletic Park in Langley and Chilliwack opened the scoring on a pick-six by Gavin Thomas.

The defensive back intercepted a pass at his own three yard line and scampered 107 yards the other way for the touchdown.

Victoria answered back with a score in the final minute of the first quarter, adding a two-point convert to lead 8-6.

They would never trail again.

Less than two minutes into the second quarter, Victoria quarterback Caeden Reiter found receiver Linden Williams on the 20 yard line.

Williams made a tough catch in double coverage and escaped to the endzone for a 16-6 Renegade lead.

Chilliwack got within four points when all-star tailback Logan Buchwitz scored on a three yard run with a mere 1:23 left on the clock.

But his Giants couldn’t recover the ensuing on-side kick and the Renegades were able to kill the clock and claim the championship.
