Junior Blaze silence Cannons in season opening doubleheader

Langley U16 baseball team defeats Vancouver 5-1 and 3-2

The Langley Junior Blaze are off to a 2-0 start after sweeping a season-opening doubleheader.

The Jr. Blaze defeated the Vancouver Junior Cannons 5-1 and 3-2 on Saturday at McLeod Park as the B.C. Junior (U16) Premier Baseball League kicked off the 2013 season.

In the opener, Parker Logan pitched six innings of two-hit ball, allowing just one unearned run. He struck out four.

Langley scored one run in the second and then another two in the third. And after the Jr. Cannons cut the lead to 3-1 in the fourth inning, the Jr. Blaze scored twice in the bottom of the sixth.

The offence was led by Danny Hollins, who had the lone RBI, while Nick Laflamme had a pair of hits.

The second game saw the Jr. Blaze lead 3-0 after four innings with Vancouver making things close with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth to make it 3-2.

And with the tying run on board in the seventh, Cooper Misic picked up the save.

Nick Evans earned the win, allowing a pair of earned runs over six innings. He struck out eight.

Dayton Wilson had an RBI for the Jr. Blaze, scoring Brendan Holmstrom with a second-inning double.

Wilson and Holmstrom had two hits apiece, with Holmstrom hitting a pair of doubles.

Langley is next in action on April 17 when they host the Abbotsford Jr. Cardinals at McLeod Park. First pitch is at 6:30 p.m.
