Kelowna golfer John Mlikotic kicked off the golf season on the right foot on the weekend.
The Simon Fraser University freshman fired a couple of great rounds at the California State University-San Marcos Invitational.
Mlikotic was sitting in a tie for fourth place in the individual standings after shotting a 72 and then a 73 in the first two of three rounds at CSU.
But the Immaculata graduate fell off the pace with an 82 in the third and final round to finish in a tie for 10th place.
Still it was a breakout tournament for the freshman member of the SFU Clan golf team as he begins the spring season.
SFU’s men’s golf team finished fifth in a field of 12 teams at the event that wrapped up on Tuesday.
Mlikotic’s 11 over par score for three rounds was the best total of the five SFU golfers who took part.
The SFU men’s golf team will be back in action on March 5 when they begin the Point Loma Nazarene Invitational at the Steele Canyon Golf Club.
SFU golfers compete in the NCAA Div. II golf league.
Mlikotic’s results are that much more impressive for the fact that he started golfing only five years ago after a series of concussions forced the Kelowna Golf and Country Club member to retire from hockey.
