Fifteen athletes from Kelowna between the ages of 12 and 15 will be heading to Lake Macquarie, Australia to compete in the 2014 International Children’s Games (ICG) Dec. 6 to 11.
Sports being represented by Team Kelowna include swimming, athletics, golf and BMX biking.
The athletes are part of a delegation of 50 coaches, family members and ICG representatives —the largest contingent Kelowna has ever sent.
“We are thrilled by the level of interest in these Games, ”said Heather Schneider, Chair of Kelowna’s ICG Legacy Committee.
Local athletes attending the games are:
• Athletics—Dane Martin, Taryn O’Neill and Rylee Paulson
• BMX—Eric Harrison and Nicolas Harrison
• Golf—Eli Cronquist and Quentin Murphy
• Swimming—Emily Epp, Logan Lalone, Matthew MacDonald, Axana Merckx, Clarisse Obedkoff, Randi Thompson, Marc Toyata and Quinn Toyata.
The ICG is the largest multi-sport youth games in the world and is a recognized member of the International Olympic Committee. Approximately 1,500 athletes and their coaches participate in this prestigious event each year.
Kelowna has been participating in the ICG since it first hosted the Winter Games in 2011. Since then Kelowna has sent delegations to: Lanarkshire, Scotland (Summer Games 2011); Daegu, Korea (Summer Games 2012); Ufa, Russia (Winter Games 2013); and Windsor, Ont. (Summer Games 2013).
