The Kelowna Skating Club and Centre of Excellence made a huge statement at the B.C. and Yukon Sectional Championships held last week in Richmond.
Nineteen local skaters returned home with three provincial titles and seven medals in total.
A highlight of the championships occurred in Pre-Novice Women as Kelowna S.C. members finished 1-2 in a field of 52 skaters.
Ajsha Gorman, a 12-year-old St Joseph’s student, won both segments of the event with a combined score of 91.16 points, the highest posted score of any skater at any of the Canadian provincial qualifying championships. In addition to the provincial title, Ajsha also won the Artistic Award for the event, as well as the Super Series title, based on top scoring average through the Pond to Podium Super Series events throughout the season.
Her result also qualified her to the Skate Canada Challenge next month at Regina. This event represents the National Championships for the Pre-Novice level.
Mckenna Colthorp, also 12, also qualified for the Skate Canada Challenge on the strength of her silver medal finish. Kelowna’s Rochelle Reeve finished in 6th place, just 0.71 shy of the last qualifying spot.
Earlier in the week, Kelowna’s Olivia Gran skated a flawless and technically demanding program to capture the Juvenile Women U11 title, as well as the event Artistic Award and Super Series overall championship. Her personal-best score of 37.24 points was also the highest posted score by a Canadian skater at the Juvenile level at any event this season.
Julianne Delaurier was the third Kelowna skater to capture a provincial crown, this time at the Junior Women’s division. The 15-year-old Okanagan Mission student won both segments of her event for a combined score of 128.86 points. She also won the Artistic Award, and won the Super Series title for the third year in a row.
Her finish also qualified her to compete at the Skate Canada Challenge, which is a qualifier for the Canadian Championships for the Novice and Junior levels.
Kelowna’s Jayda Jurome and Cailey England finished in 4th and 5th, respectively, also qualifying for the Challenge event.
At the Novice level, 14-year-old Olivia Marleau took the bronze medal in the women’s division, while 16-year-old Kelly Basisty skated to a silver medal finish in the men’s event. Both also qualified for the Challenge event.
“Overall, it was a good event for our team,” noted KSC Director Jason Mongrain. “Taking the three women’s titles is a huge accomplishment for us.”
