Soccer fields were full again last weekend with rep soccer teams taking on opponents around the valley. Here is our weekly look at Kelowna United teams in action last weekend.
U-13 Girls
The girls U-13 team played their first road game of the season in Penticton and didn’t miss a beat against the Pinnacles on Sunday in a 5-0 win. After creating several chances in the first half, midfielder Madeleine Ruse converted a long cross from fullback Morgan Hodge with her left foot to open the scoring. In the second half, Reagyn Shattock scored on a direct free kick while other goals came from Wynne Hamilton, Deziree Day and Lara Frappier.
U-14 girls
The Under-14 girls scored early and often against the Kamloops Blaze Orange FC, winning 5-0. Ashlyn Day opened the scoring just three minutes into the game before Madison Dickie’s penalty kick goal three minutes later made the score 2-0 and had Kelowna off and running.
Kate Johnson made it 3-0 before the end of the first half while Kyra McNulty and Johnson added second half goals to round out the scoring. Natalie Hope, Courtney Gunn, Brianna Tataryn and Lauren Guy played solid defense for KU.
U-16 girls
The U-16 girls were dominant against Kamloops Orange FC winning 6-0. Ten minutes into the match, Kiana Ajamzadeh sent a perfect through ball to set up Emma Johnson for the first goal. Minutes later Johnson picked up a defensive ball from Kamloops and quickly capitalized with another well placed winner. Claire Culver shot a gorgeous soaring ball from outside the Kamloops box which Brianne Mapson met at the goal line securing Kelowna’s lead 3-0 at half time. Ajamzadeh added two more in the second half while keeper Avery Watson earned the shutout in net.
U-11 boys
Kelowna’s Under-11 Warriors had a win and a tie in two games last weekend. Brandon Nemmes scored the team’s lone goal in a 1-1 tie with Vernon in its first game on Sunday.
The Warriors earned a 4-0 shutout of Shuswap in its second game of the day as Chris West scored twice and Nathen Gilbert and Nemmes each scored once.
Meanwhile the Under-11 boys Red Devils also had a win and a tie on Sunday playing to a 1-1 draw with Vernon before shutting out Kamloops 4-0.
U-12 boys Crushers
The Kelowna United Crushers U-12 boys had wins over Vernon and Revelstoke. Against Vernon Lucas Hicklin scored twice while Braeden Cangiano and Gregor Smith also scored in a 4-2 win.
Later against Revelstoke, the powerful Crushers cruised to a 5-2 win. Jovan Boparai opened the scoring to send an early message before Jagger Thomas made the score 2-0. Nic Bigattini, Hicklin and Cangiano rounded out the scoring.
U-12 boys Rebels
Kamloops and Revelstoke were no match for the KU Under-12 boys Rebels as Kelowna had two convincing wins. Shawn Kostiuk scored a hat trick in an 8-1 win over Kamloops Blue while Coleton Smith earned the goal of the match, a beautiful header off a corner kick by Kostiuk. Brandon Frechette played a very strong game and earned three assists. Four other players each scored a goal: Jacob Macdonnell, Carson Whitley, Adrian Delgado and Cameron Wilson.
The Rebels followed that win with a 6-1 win over Shuswap. Defenceman Ben Rever scored his first goal of the season on a pass from Edvin Holok, one of his five assists. Adrian Delgado scored twice and other goals came from Ben Rever, Carson Whitley and Hunter Blucke.
U-12 boys Spartans
The Spartans earned a 4-4 tie with Penticton after losing its first game of the day 5-2 to Kamloops.
Against Vernon, Nate Poortz had a pair of goals while singles came from Karson Andrew and Cain Moore in the 4-4 tie which saw Penticton score three unanswered goals to tie the game.
Earlier Kamloops had defeated the Spartans 5-2 with both Kelowna goals coming from Zander Large in a losing cause.
U-15/U-16
In an all-Kelowna matchup the Kelowna United U-15 boys played up a division against the U-16 boys.
The game was very even as the U-16’s were excellent at keeping the younger team at bay while the U-15’s defense was also strong. The U-16 club scored the lone goal of the match with about 10 minutes left to play for a 1-0 win.
