A holiday tradition continued at Peace Arch Curling Club over the Christmas season, as the White Rock club hosted the 42nd annual Hutch Bonspiel last week.

The event – which was held Dec. 27-28 – featured 64 curlers, including a team led by Steve Murray, whose family came all the way from Australia to take part, and took the bonspiel’s unofficial honour for “furthest travelled team,” according to a PACC news release.

The event was won by a Don Kennedy-skipped rink, which also included lead Jim Appoo, second Fran Hocken and third Ross Savage.

According to the release, The Hutch Bonspiel is named in memory of Elmer Hutchinson, who was a Peace Arch Curling Club member from the 1960s until the ’80s, and decided there needed to be a bonspiel held during the Christmas/New Year’s holiday that “would provide exercise for everyone and offer a change from a diet of turkey.”

For anyone interested in learning to curl, the Peace Arch club will be hosting a two-day learn-to-curl clinic this weekend – Saturday and Sunday. For more information, call club manager Gary MacKinnon at 604-531-0244 or email manager@peacearchcurling.com
