It was a sudden ending to the Saanich Braves’ best VIJHL season in years as the Kerry Park Islanders eliminated the Braves with a 7-0 shutout in Game 6 in Kerry Park on Saturday, winning the series 4-2.
The Braves didn’t score a goal in the final two games, losing 3-0 in Game 5 on Thursday. Islanders goalie Rhett Rook finished with back-to-back shutouts.
On Saturday, the Islanders scored once in the first and once in the second, then capitalized on special teams play with two power play goals and a shorthanded marker as the Islanders scored five goals in the third period.
The Islanders will face the Victoria Cougars in the Round 2 VIJHL semifinal, as the latter defeated the Westshore Wolves in six games. The Campbell River Storm will face the Nanaimo Buccaneers in the North division semifinal.
