In their final game of the regular season, the Comox Valley Kickers defeated Nanaimo 60-32 in BC Rugby Women’s action, Saturday at Cumberland Village Park.
The Kickers finished the regular season with a 10-6 record. The squad placed first in Vancouver Island Division 1, and tied for fourth overall in B.C. heading into playoffs.
“The season was fairly good for the women,” said player/coach Aimee Burley, who plays prop, lock and 8. “We dominated Division 2 last year, and with the player base decided to move up a division this year.
“In previous years that we have played Division 1, we have always fallen short and struggled. There are a lot of skilled teams in this league.”
Burley said strong leadership in the women’s program combined with the addition of talented high school and junior players has strengthened the team.
The Kickers’ next game is a quarter-final playoff match against Kamloops on Saturday, April 21 at a location to be determined. Kamloops also entered play Saturday with a 9-6 record, and faced the 4-11 Brit Lions in their final regular season match.
Comox Valley, short a few bodies, last faced Kamloops in a road game and came out on the losing end.
“We hope that with our key players and a full squad we can beat them this time around,” Burley said.
