Kickers women open rugby season with a bang

Comox Valley squad overpowers Port Alberni 57-5; host Velox Saturday

The Comox Valley Kickers women’s rugby team has their VIRU Senior Women’s season off to a good start. They won their first away game convincingly 57-5 over Port Alberni Black Sheep this past weekend.

The game started without a hitch, with Lindsay Mallette touching the ball down for a try. That set the pace for the rest of the game, with the Kickers taking control. “We were able to mess up a lot of their ball in lineouts and the scrums, which pressured them most of the game,” said Aimee Burley.

“Our backs were able to get nice clean ball from the break downs, and create space. The second half of the game we took the time to practise our new plays and try new things – it was good!” Burley said.

“We have quite a few additions to the team this season – from Lia Spruyt adding power and experience to the forwards to speedsters Carly Beaulieu and Kayla Beetstra in the backs (who also added two tries to the game). Along with the return of some solid players, this is going to shape up to be a good season for us.”

More tries came from Sam Kreeger (two), Paula Moore, Anita Ross and Allie Wood.

This Saturday the team is hosting the reigning B.C. champs, Velox Valkyries. Kick off is slated for 11:30 a.m. at Cumberland Village Park. “We invite any girls interested in playing rugby to check out www.kickersrugby.ca,” Burley said.

“The Kickers women’s team would like to thank Investors Group; without their support women’s rugby in the Valley would not be possible,” she added.
