The 2017 BC Provincial Gymnastics Championships were held from April 7 to 9 in Port Coquitlam and the six girls from the Kimberley Team who qualified for the event took home 14 ribbons and three medals.
Representing the Kimberley region at the tournament were Solana McRae, Claire Massier, Madison Jennings, Emery Hoko, Ana Mousseau and Makayla Ashby, who each played a key role in a very successful weekend for their team.
Ashby, Mousseau and Hoko competed in the Junior Olympic Level 7 category. Ashby placed 10th on Beam and seventh on Floor, ranking 23rd overall in the province. Mousseau placed seventh on Vault, eighth on Beam and sixth on Floor, ranking eight in the province. Hoko placed fifth on Vault, fifth on Uneven Bars, and fourth on Floor, ranking 5th fifth in BC.
McRae, Jennings and Massier competed in the Junior Olympics Level 6 category. McRae placed ninth on Vault, fifth on Uneven Bars, won Silver medal on Floor, and ranked 14th overall in the province. Jennings placed 13th on Beam, and 13th on Floor, ranking 20th overall in the province for her age group. Massier ranked eighth on Bars, sixth on Beam, took home the Gold medal on Floor, and was the Bronze medalist overall in the province for her age group.
The team was led by head coach Twyla Ryan and associate coach Charity Ashby. The team will now head to the Kootenay Zone Championships, which are being held on May 6 and 7 in Nelson, BC, and then tackle Kimberley’s eight annual Coconut Cup, from May 27 to 28 at McKim Middle School.
