Kings earn crown in Burnaby

Spring hockey team succeeds at tournament

The 2010 Fraser Valley Kings were crowned champions earlier this month in the King of the Rings tournament in Burnaby.

The Kings hockey team is composed of six- and seven- year-old players from Mission and Abbotsford.

The team finished the tournament with four wins and one tie, earning victories over the UBC Thunder, BC Spartans and Richmond Kodiaks, and tying the Prince George Tigers in the opening game of the tournament.

The Kings’ forecheck created a ton of turnovers in the championship game, and the Kings earned an 8-3 victory to win the tournament. Each player was awarded a championship ring for their achievement.

Players on the team include Mission’s Beau Carew, Bentley Edgar, Bryce Boucher, Carson Mckimmon, Carter Lindsay, Clark Galos, Danny Pollard, Jake Kittles, Kaeden Willard, Tanner Chahal, Zachary Mitchell and goalie Ryan Schillings. Abbotsford players on the team are Jovan Brar, Karman Gill and River Wind.

The Kings’ roster is coached by Kosie Galos, Brock Cornish, Damon Matkovich, Kyle Kittles and Adam Phelps.

The 2009 and 2006 Fraser Valley Kings teams won silver medals in the Chilliwack Spring Kickoff tournament in the first weekend in April. The three Kings teams practise and play out of the Mission Leisure Centre.

The Fraser Valley Kings development program offers development opportunities for players in Hockey 1 to players currently skating in the WHL.

Bailey Dhaliwal of the Vancouver Giants and Jake Toor of the Coquitlam Express have spent time with the young players, mentoring them on the importance of having fun and working hard in development to make their dreams a reality.

The next big event for the team is the Kings Cup, which runs from May 5 to 7 at the MLC. Eight teams in the 2006 age group will battle it out for the title. For more, visit fraservalleykings.blogspot.ca.
