Abbotsford Christian School‘s Jack Boersma has been named the 2015-16 BC School Sports Provincial Coach of the Year.
The award honours a teacher who has made an outstanding contribution over an extended period of time to coaching athletic programs in the secondary schools. Boersma, who has taught at ACS for 36 years, was recognized for his strong character and values, and leading excellent programs.
Boersma, who is also the athletic director at the school, has helped grow the Knights Track and Field program into one of the largest in B.C., with 80 students from Grades 8 to 12 competing this year. He has done this by making the program accessible to all and has emphasized participation, but has aimed to provide a structured program so that athletes can aim for excellence.
ACS track and field athletes have won six individual gold medals and continually push bigger schools for team titles at the local and zone levels.
Boersma has also served three terms of two years each as the president of the British Columbia Christian School Sports Athletic Association, and the organization’s junior athlete of the year award is named after him.
