Knights shine in home openers

The Meadow Ridge Knights got three out of four wins in their home opening games on Saturday.

The Meadow Ridge Knights got three out of four wins in their home opening games on Saturday.

The Knight midgets doubled up the Cowichan Bull Dogs on Saturday at Samuel Robertson Technical. Both clubs fought hard in a mid-field trench battle that saw the end of the first half tied 14-14.

Ridge came back strong in the second half, putting 14 points on the board to defeat the Bull Dogs 28-14. Four different players scored touchdowns: running back Tyrel Ogloff, wide receiver Liam Evanow, quarterback Sidney Berglund and fullback Phillip Cromwell.

Kicker Werner Atkinson nailed all four converts.

All five of these players have been announced as 2014 Current Stars B.C. team members for the Alberta/B.C. Border Bowl game, which will be played Dec. 13 in Chilliwack. This is a new bowl game intended to showcase the top graduating high school and community football players in the two provinces. Some 22 scouts have confirmed that they will be taking in the game in person or online.

North Delta will host the midgets on Sept. 13.

• Atom: The atom Blue Knights kicked it all off on Sunday morning with a convincing 34-0 win over the Chilliwack Giants.

Quarterback Quintin Steinmann led the offence to victory, as he hit Devon Crenshaw in the end-zone for a touchdown. Crenshaw found the end-zone on the ground, as well, joining Giant slayers Kesler Johnson, Carter Smith and Calib Gruninger, who also scored touchdowns against Chilliwack.

Defensive linemen Ayden Barrett and Levi Spencer-Fell teamed up with with Kody Davey and Viktor Pouznar, making several key tackles that kept Chilliwack out of the end-zone all game long.

The Knight will take their 2-0 record on the road to Abbotsford on Saturday.

Pee wee: Pee wee action saw the Mission Niners shutout 29-0 by the Blue Knights.

Defensive backs Carter Bradford and Gavin Mitchell locked down the corners, forcing the Mission team into the heart the Knights’ defence, where they met Lane Viscount and Maxx Hanson, who controlled the line.

Riley Rooney and A.J. Steinmann each logged scores on the day, complementing two touchdowns punched in by halfback Isaiah Cavalli.

They are in Chilliwack this weekend. (

Junior bantam: At the junior bantam level, the Blue Knights lost to Chilliwack by a score of 34-0.

The White Knights headed to Langley and beat the Bears 34-0.

Jevon Anutooshkin and Cade Cote rushed for two touchdowns each. Cole Leon and Zachary Mayer-Buss controlled the line of scrimmage for the Knights.

On defence, Evan Vasarhely and Blake Alford made numerous tackles .

Nathan Redekoop kicked two extra points and also put up an onside kick that was recovered by Brayden Hamilton.

The win puts the White Knights at 1-1 on the season, as they head into Mission on Saturday the take on the Niners at Heritage Park.
