The Meadowridge Knights community football program had another successful weekend, with local teams picking up five wins in seven games played.
The midget Knights downed Cowichan 27-20 in the home opener for the senior team. The Knights had a strong offensive showing, led by quarterback Cole Warren and the receiving crew of Daniel Childress, Cory Takahara, Trevor Leblanc and Dylan McDermid. Defensively, Travis McCrea and Elijah Goerzen kept the Cowichan quarterback under pressure. The midget squad improved to 1-2 on the season, and plays next week against Burnaby at home at Samuel Robertson Technical.
In bantam action, the Knights defeated Abbotsford 18-14. Jackson Murdoch scored two touchdowns for the Knights behind the solid blocking of David Rainey and Nikola Damnjanovic. The Knight’s defence was led by Jake Rodgers with two interceptions and solid tackling from Matt Oye and Tyrel Ogloff.
In junior bantam play, the Knights beat Mission 30-0. Dexter Stewart played well for the Knights and Thomas Janke also had a strong game on the offensive line. Garret Orobko played well at slotback while Justin Fedorako had a strong game at corner.
In peewee action, the Gold Knights beat Chilliwack Blue Gaints 14-12 in a thriller. With 40 seconds left in the game Chilliwack scored to take the lead 12-8. However, Cade Cote scored for the Knights on the last play of the game, running 55 yards for a touchdown. On offense Angus MacDonald, Jacob Gordon and Sean Roy provided excellent blocking while defensively Dryden Pollen had a strong game at corner. Brayden Hamilton kicked the extra point that was the difference in the game and made a key block on the last play of the game.
The peewee Blue Knights won 12-6 over Mission. Both Knights’ touchdowns were scored by Brandon Hunt. Tyler Spencer completed five straight passes while Mason Wakabayashi, Tato Ferreyro-Araya and Jake Loftus made some great gains on offense. Darius Joseph, Shaan Singh, Nickolas Leinhaas and Chase Wise played a solid defensive game.
The atom Blue Knights suffered their first loss of the season in Mission. Spirits were high, and the boys played hard throughout the game, but they were out-sized, and unable to slow the attacking Niner defense. Knights quarterback Cody Hogarth, full-back Riley Celino, and tight-end Riley Rooney all saw some positive yards, but the Mission team quickly adapted keeping the Knights out of the end zone. Linebackers Dallas Pattenden and Ciaran Davies, and cornerback Nicho Zolliker made a number of tackles in the Niner back-field, but a few big plays went for big gains as the Knights fell to the Niners 34-0
The atom Gold Knights forfeited their game to Chilliwack on Saturday as they did not have enough players. The players that did show up displayed great spirit and played a friendly scrimmage with some of the Chillwack players.
