The Aldergrove Kodiaks turned in a stellar performance against the Grandview Steelers on Sunday afternoon to win 6-4 and retain the top of the division honours with 30 points.
Grandview led in shots with 31 to 21 for Aldergrove but on the other fronts, the Kodiaks led the way at Burnaby Winter Club. The Kodiaks scored on two of six power plays and Thomas Hardy leads the league in scoring with 41 points after 21 games. Stephen Ryan, Daniel Higgs and Matthew Luongo earned the game’s first, second and third stars, respectively.
Aldergrove’s Ryan Veillet opened the scoring at 3:34, assisted by Luongo, and Hardy, assisted by Alex Feighan and Colton Precourt in a power play, put the Kodiaks up 2-0 at 12:49 of the first.
The Steelers got on the scoreboard at 1:57 of the second but less than 30 seconds later Ryan, assisted by Jordan Pughe and Higgs, gave the Kodiaks a 3-1 lead. The Steelers potted another on Kodiaks keeper Ross Baadsvik at 7:17 but the Kodiaks took two more at 10:47 by Higgs and Ryan and at 12:52 by Brandon Potomak, Colby Rosner and Hardy to make it 5-2. The Steelers closed the period with another goal at 18:32.
The Steelers scored their last goal of the game at 9:47 of the third and the Kodiaks closed the scoring at 11:37 on another power play by Robert Jang from Veillet and Luongo.
The win gives the Kodiaks 30 points after 21 games with a 14-5-1-1 record. Abbotsford Pilots trail at 27 points after 20 games, while the rest of the division follows at 17 points for Port Moody, eight for Ridge Meadows and seven for Mission.
Aldergrove hosts the Ridge Meadows Flames on Nov. 29 and travel to Sungod to face the North Delta Devils on Dec. 3 before hosting the North Vancouver Wolf ∏ack, Wednesday, Dec. 7 at 7:15 p.m.
Sharp sharp in Kodiaks win
Thanks to some sharp goaltending, the Aldergrove Kodiaks put an end to a brief two-game losing streak with a 4-0 victory over the Mission Icebreakers.
Brenden Sharp, an affiliate player making his first appearance for the Kodiaks, stopped all 27 shots he faced on Thursday night at the Mission Leisure Centre in junior B hockey action.
Thomas Hardy had two assists to extend his lead atop the scoring race in the Pacific International Junior Hockey League.
Colton Precourt, Alex Feighan, Brandon Potomak and Stephen Ryan had the Kodiak goals.
Aldergrove leads the Harold Brittain Conference with 28 points, two ahead of the Pilots.
The Pilots had briefly pulled into a tie with the Kodiaks in the standings on Wednesday night thanks to a 3-2 overtime victory.
Alex Feighan scored twice in the loss.
Kodiaks fall to Pilots
The Aldergrove Kodiaks were on their way to an important win over the Abbotsford Pilots Wednesday night at Aldergrove Arena, with two power play scores by Alex Feighan, but the Pilots eked out a 3-2 overtime win in the first overtime period.
This means that the two teams now share first place in the division with 26 points apiece.
Aldergrove was up 1-0 at the end of the first period, after Feighan scored at 15:53, assisted by Ryan Veillet and Matthew Luongo.
The Pilots evened it up early in the second before Feighan scored at 8:37, assisted by Colton Precourt and Thomas Hardy. The Pilots evened it up again at 10:22 and the third period remained scoreless.
Pilor Kyle Star netted the OT winner at 1:20, earning him the game’s first star. Kodiak Feighan earned second star.
Kodiaks keeper Ross Baadsvik turned aside 44 of 47 shots while the Kodiaks took 39 shots on the Pilots’ Aaron Oakley. Kodiaks scored on two of five power plays while the Pilots got zero on five.
