Kwalikum team drops match to NDSS; eyes rivalry match with Ballenas Oct. 26

The Kwalikum Secondary School junior girls volleyball team got off to a fast start, but couldn’t maintain the momentum while dropping a series of games to Nanaimo District Secondary in mid-Island AA league play at home last Wednesday.

With the help of a run of service aces by Madi Jacobson, the Kondors’ Team 1 rolled to a 16-4 lead and went on to top the NDSS Team 2 25-17 in the teams’ opening game.

But NDSS rallied for a 25-10 victory in the second game and claimed the match with a 15-9 win in the decisive third game.

The Kondors then faced NDSS Team 1 and, despite another strong start, settled for a 25-18, 25-12 loss to the visitors.

Like several of the programs in the mid-Island league, both KSS and Nanaimo had strong turnout during tryouts, and each carry a pair of junior teams.

Kwalikum Team 2 opened Wednesday’s play with a two-game loss to NDSS Team 1 and then was swept in a closer battle with NDSS Team 2.

Only one team at each school will be eligible to contest for the North Island and Vancouver Island championships, which kick off at the end of the month.

On Oct. 26, Kwalikum will wrap up its regular season with a showdown against local rival Ballenas Secondary in Parksville. The matches will begin at 3:30 p.m.

Both local schools travel in league play this week.
