An epic tilt saw Fines outdraw van Yzerloo in a shot-making clinic by both teams in Kootenay Savings Super League curling action at the Trail Curling Club on Thursday.
Skip Ken Fines was wearing his super-hero cape this night against a Bill van Yzerloo team that likely deserved better. Facing five opposition stones in the first, skip Fines made an almost perfect double-raise takeout to the four-foot, limiting the damage to only a van Yzerloo steal of one.
Fines scored a deuce in the second, with two back-to-back draws to the button. The teams then traded singles before van Yzerloo jumped back in the lead with a double take-out for two in the fifth. Fines tied it with a draw to the button in the sixth, then again kept his team in it with two great shots in the seventh. Facing four stones, Ken made a perfect long raise to lay one. Van Yzerloo followed with a long double take-out to restore laying four, but Fines countered with a delicate hit and roll to the four-foot. Van Yzerloo tried another long raise take-out, that just over-curled, giving Team Fines the steal, to be one up coming home without.
Fines was again facing four opposition stones, when he calmly drew through an outside port with his last rock, freezing to the shot stone at the back of the button, fully guarded. Van Yzerloo went for the win, attempting a runback raise take-out, just grazing by the shot stone, for a Fines steal of one and a great 6-4 win.
Team Borsato, skipped by Brittany Horbul this week, started strong against Team Sitkum IT, skipped by Nando Salviulo. With an open hit for two in the first, then junking the front of the house up, leading to steals in the second and third, Team Borsato had an early lead 4-0. Sitkum was in trouble again in the fourth before Skip Nando made a perfect raise take-out for three. The teams then traded deuces, before Sitkum clawed their way into the lead with a steal of two in the seventh. Skip Brittany salvaged a single point with a draw to the four foot in the eighth and a 7-7 tie.
Team Jill Winters were in complete control of Team Darrin Albo. Team Winters forced Albo into one in the first, then took two in the second when Jill made a nice come around tap. Skip Albo was displaying some rust in his game after the three week absence, as Team Winters stole the next four ends, leading to a 6-1 win.
Team Russ Beauchamp and Team Heather Nichol, skipped by Jan Kambick this week, waged a close fought battle. Beauchamp was forced to take one in the first, then stole singles in the second, third and fourth ends, when Skip Jan’s last rock would end up just on the wrong side of perfect. Team Nichol got on the board in the fifth, held Beauchamp to another single in the sixth, then closed the gap, with an open hit for two in the seventh, but Team Beauchamp held onto the 5-3 win, running the opposition out of stones in the eighth.
Team Marcus Partridge were in tough with Team Bedard Excavating, skipped by Deane Horning, until one bad end did them in. Horning got things going with a double take-out for two in the first, with Partridge answering with his won double for two in the second. Team Bedard was forced to take one in the third, then stole a single in the fourth when Skip Marcus, staring at a crowded four foot, attempted a delicate chip and lie to lay three, that just didn’t curl enough, jamming the shot stone on his own for the Bedard steal.
Partridge took one in the fifth, but the game got out of reach in the sixth, when everything went Team Bedard’ s way, for a huge five-ender, and a 9-3 Bedard Excavating win.
