Sant Saran’s Kootenay Tae Kwon Do (TKD) brought a nine member team to Budapest to compete in the World Cup (WC). Fifty-seven countries and over 1,800 competitors attended this event and Canada placed 8th overall.
The tournament ran in Budapest for six days from Oct. 11-16 and the competition was fierce but their members were ready to take on the world.
Kootenay’s Markus Liebe brought a Silver medal home from the Budapest World Cup in sparring. This is the 3rd World Cup that Kootenay has attended and they have medaled in every one of them: London; one silver and two bronze,
Jamaica; one silver and now Budapest; one silver. They also placed 1st and 3rd at the World Championships held in India.
Our communities have a group of world-class athletes proudly representing them. The other team members performed very well in the ring, some close to placing but lost with some tough breaks, you need to be tournament ready and Kootenay stood up to the plate.
It is tournaments like the WC that inspire the athletes to come home and train harder to prepare for the next WC being held in Australia in 2017.
Kootenay Tae Kwon Do trains throughout the year in all of the communities from the Crowsnest Pass to Fernie.
