Courtenay’s Greg Koster was part of a talented contingent of Vancouver Island golfers at the Canadian Men’s Mid-Amateur Championships, held Sept. 4-7 at Point Grey Golf & Country Club in Vancouver.
The Sunnydale golfer finished in a two-way tie for 27th in the Mid-Amateur at 17-over 305 (76-76-79-74), which was good enough for 11th place in the Mid-Master division. Koster was the sixth best Vancouver Island golfer in the Mid-Amateur and third best in the Mid-Master.
Kevin Carrigan of Victoria carded a final-round two-under par 70 to capture the 2012 Men’s Mid-Amateur title.
A product of the University of Texas at Arlington, Carrigan, the reigning B.C. Men’s Mid-Amateur champion, finished at three-under par 285 for the championship, besting three-time Canadian Men’s Mid-Amateur champion Dave Bunker of Woodbridge, Ont. by three strokes. Bunker posted a four-day tally of even-par 288 after carding a score of one-under par 71 on Friday to earn runner-up honours.
With the victory, Carrigan earned an exemption into the 2013 RBC Canadian Open at Glen Abbey Golf Club in Oakville, Ont.
Defending Canadian Men’s Mid-Amateur champion Rob Couture of Trenton, Ont., now a resident of Dallas, Tex., finished T3 alongside Victoria’s Craig Doell at two-over par 290, while Tyler Frank of Saskatoon and Danny Lovell of Dallas, Tex. finished T5 at three-over par 291.
Bunker, meanwhile, captured his sixth career Canadian Men’s Mid-Amateur Championship Mid-Master Division title, besting Doell by two strokes for the win.
