Without the services of three key players, the Kelowna Secondary School Owls still had enough firepower to grab the bronze medal at the Mizuno UBC Invitational high school girls volleyball tournament.
In last Saturday’s third place final at UBC, the Owls defeated Timberline in a tiebreaker to claim the bronze. The win avenged a loss to the same Timberline team a night earlier.
In Friday’s pool play, KSS started slowly winning just one of three matches but it was still good enough to qualify for tier 1 of the playoffs.
In the quarter finals, the Owls faced Kamloops. After a slow start which saw power Grace Freiheit leave with an injury, KSS dug deep to win in an exciting tiebreaker, putting them into the semi finals.
In the semis, KSS lost to Lambrick Park in two sets.
Manitoba’s Neelin High School won the gold medal.
Quinci Birker of the Owls was named a tournament all-star.
OKM athletics…
The OKM Huskies senior boys defeated Kalamalka 2-0 and Fulton 2-1 in Okanagan AA league play Tuesday.
The Huskies, who have five returning players were, fourth at provincials last season. OKM will play this weekend at the MEI tourney in Abbotsford.
In girls play Tuesday, the Huskies downed Seaton 3-1. OKM will head to Langley this weekend for a tournament.
In cross country news, OKM runners took the top two places in the season opening event, with Adam Murray finishing first and John Gay, second.
