The Kwalikum Secondary School junior boys soccer team had its final tune-up for the North Island Championships last week with a friendly match against Aspengrove School of Lantzville.
Perhaps a little too friendly.
“That was the funnest and craziest soccer game I ever played in,” one Aspengrove player noted as the teams shook hands after circling together on the field.
Things got a little more serious for the Kondors this week as they hosted the Junior boys AA North Island Champonships at Qualicum Beach rec field.
The tournament began with two loser-out games yesterday, and wraps up today with the top three teams advancing to the Island championships.
Kwalikum opens play in today’s 11:45 a.m. semifinals after wrapping up a No. 1 seed in the regular season. Regardless of the outcome of that match, the Kondors will play again at 2:45 p.m., in either the championship final or the third-place match.
The host Kondors “won” last week’s matchup with Aspengrove, which included several Kwalikum players suiting up for the short-handed visitors at Qualicum Beach.
Qualicum coach Butch Gayton roamed the centre of the field, serving as referee, coach, and stand-up comic.
Seniors host playoff Wednesday
The Kwalikum senior boys team will play at 3:30 p.m. tomorrow in Qualicum Beach in a Mid-Island AA conference seeding qualifier for the AA North Island Championships, to be played Nov. 1-2 at Frances Kelsey Secondary in Mill Bay.
Wednesday’s opponent has not yet been named.
