Eight teams turned out on Wednesday for the Pheasant Glen High School Island Invitational, and the host Kondors from Kwalikum Secondary School carved out a second place finish.
“It was fun … the course was playing very well — great weather with shifting winds,” said KSS teacher/coach Butch Gayton.
Belmont Secondary School took honours at the tourney, played out over 18 holes, with a four-player total of 291.
The Kondors grabbed second at 296, and Dover Bay was third at 323.
Kwalikum Grade 11s Luigi Trozzo and Santiago Buorro both shot 72s. Belmont had two players turn in 71s for the top scores of the day.
“Just solid golf — nothing spectacular, just consistent golf,” Gayton said of his top two, adding young Cole Morrison shot a stellar 73, the fifth lowest score of the day.
Morrison and Trozzo both dialled up three birdies on the day, while Buorro fired four.
Also in the mix for Dover Bay was Zach Anderson who was coming off a surprising win at the CN Future Links Pacific Championship held last weekend at Morningstar. Anderson didn’t fair so well at ‘the Glen though, as he finished with an 82.
“Thanks to Gord we made the best out of the situation,” Gayton said when asked if the tournament was bitter-sweet insomuch as it replaced the BC School Sport AA Vancouver Island golf championships cancelled due to teachers’ job action.
“The kids were happy to be a part or it,” said Gayton, pointing out Pheasant Glen put on a big show with a post tournament buffet for all the players and coaches, along with individual and team prizes.
The AA Island Championships had been scheduled to be played out at Pheasant Glen last week, “so we just decided to go ahead with it for the players,” said event chair and Pheasant Glen head pro Gord Melissa.
