The L.V. Rogers Lady Bombers field hockey team earned a win during a busy slate of games but lost twice to rival J.L. Crowe of Trail.
LVR dropped 2-1 to Crowe on Thursday, then again 3-0 on Saturday. In between, the team fell 2-1 to Oliver’s South Okanagan Secondary on Friday, beat Kelowna’s Mount Boucherie 1-0 and finished with a scoreless draw against Castlegar’s Stanley Humphries on Saturday.
In the first league game Thursday, LVR took the lead on a goal by Shianne Michalchuk. But Crowe rallied in the second half with plenty of offensive pressure that resulted in a pair of goals and the win. Forward Paige Miesner rolled her ankle during the game, which hurt the team’s depth through the weekend.
The Bombers then played the Castlegar Playday over the weekend. Sianna Morningstar scored after some nice passing by Noa Butterfield and a strong run by Michalchuk to tie the game at one, but Oliver squeaked the ball over the goal-line in the last minute for the 2-1 win.
LVR’s lone win was a credit to hard work by Butterfield. Against Mount Boucherie, Butterfield forced a foul then scored on the ensuing short corner with a hard low shot past the keeper. Bombers keeper Rylee Zondervan was also solid in preserving the shutout.
Wet conditions made for tricky play on Saturday as teams struggled on a rain-soaked field. Passing was a chore for both sides, and players often ended up taking unexpected baths in the scoreless draw. LVR midfielders Morningstar and Aimee Montpellier each suffered leg injuries during the game, which hurt an already short Bombers bench.
In the final game, exhaustion and injuries took a toll on the Bombers, who couldn’t hold off an organized and speedy Crowe team in the 3-0 loss.
Next up for the Bombers is a league game Wednesday against Stanley Humphries.
