There was a promise of warm golfing weather in the air on Tuesday night, May 7.

Thirty-four ladies showed up at Chinook Cove Golf to test their skills. Some passed the test and some of us failed while trying bravely. Susan Newberry had a fantastic night and required a wheelbarrow to haul her winnings home. Not only did she win low gross for Flight 1 with a score of 45 but she also took home the deuce pot which had been building up for three weeks. She split the Chip-In Pot with Brenda Oakland and Deb Legaree. She won the least putt prize with a putt count of 13 (you non-golfers should know that that is only a dream for many of us.). She won pins for a long putt (Bear Lane Bistro & Boutique) and a KP (Royal LePage/Cindy Leibel). You just couldn’t wipe the smile off her face.

The low net winner in Flight 1 sponsored by Campbell & Company was Marian Wallace with a score of 45 (33.5). The Flight 2 sponsor is Kelly VanGenne of Expedia CruiseShipCenters. The low gross was won by Deb Legaree with a score of 39 and Trudy Forsythe took low net with a score of 52 (36). In Flight 3 Evelyn Lucas scored a 52 to win low gross while Darleen LeCerf had a 54 (33.5) to win low net. Low score for Flight 4 was Lois McInnis with a 54 (her lowest score EVER). Val Williams came in second with a score of 60. We can only imagine what her score might have been if her putter had been working. Val had the dubious honour of winning the most putt prize from Sun Life Financial with a total of 24. Flight 4 was sponsored this week by Stamer Logging.

There are eight possibilities for KPs but only five were claimed. The winners were Ilke Marais (MJB Lawyers), Cindy Leibel (Barb and Carman Smith), Deb Legaree (Brian and Brenda Carl) and Marie Hakes (Ron Wallace Trucking). Rest in Peace prizes went to a number of ladies. Thanks goes out to this week’s sponsors, North Thompson Funeral Services and Hub International. KP in 2 for Flight 3 and 4 went to Evelyn Lucas (Station House Restaurant). The Thompson Valley Awards mug for Short Drive went to Stacey Gartner while Barb Smith picked up the AG Foods prize for coming closest to the 150 yard marker on Hole 9. And no, ladies…you cannot move the white stick closer to your ball. The 150 yard marker is the cement diamond in the grass.

Long Putt winners were Jeannie Webber (Barriere Motor Inn), Betty Foote (Barriere Timber Mart), Trudy Forsythe (Gift ‘n Gab), and Lois McInnis (Armour Mountain Office Supplies). The Long Drive prizes went to Evelyn Lucas (High 5 Diner), Wanda Amos (Mane Street Hair), Darleen LeCerf (Rainer Custom Cutting), Marion Wallace (Little Fort Subway) and Stacey Gartner (Sam’s Pizza). Two prizes on Hole 5 didn’t have winners but went to Brenda Oakland (Munro’s Clothing Co.) and Ilke Marais (Quality Contractors) in a draw. Thought I should take a minute to thank our Hole In One sponsors. Prizes are provided by Alpine Meadow Resort, Barriere Auto Parts and Bob Stirling.

We often hear some good stories about great shots, weird shots, silly shots and downright unbelievable shots. Betty Baillie made one of the unbelievable variety this week. Driving from the tee box on number 2 her shot was heading straight for the water. Miraculously it hit the thinnest of birch trees and bounced back up to her on the tee box. Saved her from having to count a penalty stroke for going in the water. Ben Hogan once said “the most important shot in golf is the next one”.
