The Ladysmith 49ers U13 A Peewees were nearly unstoppable at the recent provincial tournament, coming away with their heads held high and a silver medal.

The boys went undefeated during round robin play, mercying all four teams (Burnaby 17-6, North Shore 13-0, Victoria 13-1 and Parksville 15-5), and beating Tsawwassen in the semi-final game 10-0.

In the finals, the Peewees came up short in a 8-7 nerve-racking loss to Victoria.

That team made it through to the final after ousting Campbell River in a tight semi-final.

The game against Ladysmith came down to 7th inning with the 49ers at bat, the tying run on third and two away.

“The team worked hard at every practice, and came together as a team fast. Together they created some friends and memories to last a lifetime,” said head coach Shawn Freer.

Some fielding errors got Ladysmith behind early in the game and there was some disappointment to not come home with the gold, especially since the boys topped Victoria at zones in a another nail-biter.

In the final, lefty starting pitcher Alex Marsh went 3 1/2 innings, and Dylan Hodson closed the game out.

Riley McAulay hit Ladysmith’s only over the fence home run during the game for two runs. Victoria walked him during his next at bat.

Overall, it was a great weekend of ball with the highest level of sportsmanship coming from the boys and coaching staff.

Team Roster: Nolan Freer, Cooper Smith, Dylan Hodson, Gabe Wiebe, Riley McAulay, Garrett McIntosh, Robert Christenson, Jack Copp, Alex Marsh, Sam Smith, Myles Gray, Noah Atkinson.
