LaFrance and Repole team win in sturling showdown

Prince Rupert Curling Club hosts Fisherman's Sturling Spiel on Jan. 20 with 17 teams

Frank Repole and Pierra LaFrance were the last two standing in the A Event at the Fisherman’s Sturling Spiel on Sunday, Jan. 20.

The two-person curling tournament at the Prince Rupert Curling Club had 17 teams competing from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m.

Each team played three or more six-end games that involved either stick or slide delivery.

Club president Jamie Malthus said there are only about a handful of players who push the rock with a stick.

“It’s all about developing weight control and probably line control as well,” Malthus said, in between games.

The purpose of the tournament is to get players out on the ice who don’t curl full time.

There were teams of all ages there on Sunday. Josh Mayeda and Brandon Mah made up one of the youngest teams. The high schoolers have been playing since Grade 1, and they’ve played together for 10 years.

“Our principal (Kathy Dann) was a club curler and its been a part of our lifestyle since forever,” said Mah just before his semi-final match.

The B Event was won by Steve and Anita Eso, over the youthful duo of Josh Mayeda and Brandon Mah. In the C Event, Travis and Crystal Bernhardt beat Flo and Thomas Peloquin. D Event saw club president Jamie Malthus and Tom Harvey overtake spiel organizer Marjorie and Dave Peacock.
