Lake City Club Basketball’s under-14 and U17 girls teams racked up victories at a Simon Fraser Univeristy Club Basketball Tournament.

The U14 team went 3-1 starting with a 39-38 loss to Coquitlam West.

“It was a tough opening loss. We led the whole game, but we had trouble scoring down the stretch,” said Lake City coach Chris Terris.

Jaden Yamamoto, Tess Widney and Sophie Brydon each scored six points.

Brydon then led Lake City with eight points in a 40-28 win over South Vancouver Island. Karrah Roelfsema led with five rebounds.

Against South Vancouver Island 1, Brydon was at it again, scoring 10 points leading to a 39-25 win. Yamamoto led with six rebounds. In Lake City’s final game, a 40-25 win over Triple Threat, Lexi Corday scored 12 points and added four rebounds. Brydon added 10 points, with Brinay Burdick scoring six points and Widney and Roelfsema chipping in four.

“Lexi put it all together in the final game. She contributed in so many ways, but until the final game she was struggling to score,” said Terris. “Players such as Zoe Vriends, Rylee Pennock, Lauren Brooke and Morgan Montgomery-Reid did a fantastic job in supporting roles, making hustle plays to give us extra possessions and finding ways to contribute at both ends of the floor.”

Lake City U17 takes three of four

Lake City faced a familiar foe in Lynn Valley and got off to a great start lead to a 68-36 win. Starting point guard Hannah Clarke played very well initiating a transition game and distributing the ball. Annick Cole played tough defence and Brittany Young, in her game, also contributed offensively and defensively.  In addition to some great guard play, Lyndzie Caron, Emma Schneider and Madision Terbasket dominated the low post.

Lake City faced a tougher task against Triple Threat in their second game, losing 78-49. In a previous match at UBC-O, coach Dustin Hyde said they “got torched.”

“This time we put up a much better fight. The first ten minutes were very competitive,” he said. “By the end of the first half we were down 14.  We had some great energy off the bench from three of our U15 players that played up for the weekend – Emma Terris, Kayley Davies, Kali Loewen. All three played considerable minutes and were a great spark.”

In their third game, Lake City defeated West Vancouver by eight points. They erased a poor start by finding energy eight minutes into the match. Lake City was able to utilize its post game against the smaller squad and dominated the opening half.

Hyde praised Terris’ job at dishing the ball to her teammates, while Jocelyn Brady played very strong defence. Natalie Parkin made several amazing, fast break passes that led to layups against full court pressure. Cole continued her strong defensive play leading to several steals for transition lay ups.

The final game was against the Prince George Timberwolves came down to the wire. Cole put a dagger into the Timberwolves with a three-point shot with nine seconds left.

“This was a great final game for us.  We saw several lead changes and some great back and forth play,” said Hyde.

Leading Lake City in offence all weekend  were Schneider, Terbasket and Caron.  Top defensive players were Cole and Young, while  assist leaders were Clarke and Terris.
