The Thompson Okanagan Lakers are out of the running for the Esso Cup national female midget hockey championship.
In a tight series from start to finish, the Lakers fell two games to one to the Northern Capitals in the B.C. Female Midget AAA semifinals.
Thompson got the jump in the best-of-three series opener Friday in Prince George with a 3-2 win. On Saturday, the Capitals rebounded with a 3-2 win. Kayla Waldbiling of West Kelowna picked up an assist in the loss.
On Sunday, in a heartbreaking conclusion, the Lakers fell to the Prince George squad 3-2 in overtime. West Kelowna’s Christy Blackburne picked up a goal and an assist, while Riley Henderson added an assist.
The Lakers advanced to the second round after taking down the Kootenay Wild in straight games in the quarterfinals.
While the Lakers’ competitive season is over, Thompson Okanagan will play an exhibition game later this month against the Japanese national women’s team. The game goes at 4 p.m. at the Shaw Centre in Salmon Arm.
