A West Shore gymnast in her first year of competition has made the cut to compete in the provincials.
Langford resident Georgia Schmidt won a bronze medal on bars in the Junior 6 Olympic category at a qualifying meet on March 19 in Port Alberni.
The Spencer middle schooler, who has been training with Falcon Gymnastics for three years, said she was surprised with the result.
“I think I’m strongest at floor, so I was really happy to do that well on bars,” said the 11-year-old Grade 6 student.
She’ll join 20 gymnasts from the Island who qualified for the B.C. provincial championship, to be held April 14 to 16 in Langley.
“I’m really looking forward to the provincials,” said Schmidt, who will join her older sister Emily, 15, in competition at the event.
Schmidt said she enjoys going to competitions with her sibling. “I learn a lot from watching the older girls compete.”
She credits her success to her coaches, Peter and Renata Allan, owners of Falcon Gymnastics in Saanich. “They really help push me to improve my skills,” Schmidt noted.
Falcon Gymnastics will send 13 girls to the provincials out of a team total of 40 competitive athletes.
